What is laminate, and how is it fabricated into countertops?
Laminate kitchen countertops consist of several layers of heated and compressed paper with melamine resin. The top layer is what we see as the colour or pattern that becomes your countertop. Today's variety of laminate patterns and colours numbers in the thousands.
Is formica laminate just another name for laminate?
Formica® laminate is a well-known laminate brand, but there are many others. At PF Custom Countertops, we also offer Arborite, Nevamar, Wilsonart®, and Pionite® brand laminates to give you the widest selection.
What are the benefits of laminate kitchen countertops?
Aside from the many options in colour and style, laminate countertops are great if you want to use undermount sinks. Undermount sinks are available in stainless steel, vitreous china, or solid surface materials, and can be used with laminate to create a clean look. This option eliminates the sink rim that protrudes above the deck of the countertop, and makes for easier usage and clean-up.
What styles are available?
Laminate countertops come in the following styles:
Post-formed - These are machine-made and typically include the backsplash and counter as one piece. They have rounded edges in various profiles.
Self edge - This style has a straight counter with a square edge in front and a separate backsplash on the back of the counter.
Bevel edge - A 45-degree champhered edge that can be accented to tie into other colours in the kitchen is the defining feature of this style.
What is the life expectancy of laminate kitchen countertops?
When used and maintained correctly, laminate kitchen countertops can last many years. Always use cutting boards or trivets to protect your countertop.
Do solid surface materials offer greater durability than laminates?
Yes. Solid surface materials are more durable and easier to maintain and repair. Most solid surface products come with warranty periods that average 10 years. But there are advantages to laminates, like the colour variety. We can help you decide which product is best for your project.
How do I maintain my laminate kitchen countertops?
Clean with mild cleanser and water, and avoid abrasive products, including those containing bleach.
How much do laminate countertops cost?
Of all the materials available, laminate countertops are the least expensive surfacing option (solid surface countertops are more expensive). Prices will vary depending on the colour, style, and edging.
